Beware of these Tires

In consideration for all those out there with GL 1800 Goldwings. These tires border on unsafe. There are Two members in our GWRRA Chapter who have run these tires. Letters are being sent to Cont. Tire. Forget about miliage, that's not even a concern. As one review said, get rid of tires before the tires get rid of you. I would give this no stars if I could. Tires have a counter steer action. Please take concern. Dunlops Bridgestones, Avons, I have run and although could critize any tire they are much safer and will keep you alive

Noisy & Solid Vibration

Some know me, some do not. I have close to 300,000 miles since Feb of 2007 alone. I have a fully Traxxionized 2007 GL1800 in addition to 7 other actively used bikes. I am a Riding Consultant who regularly performs demonstrations and seminars as well as testing products for the motorcycling community.

Here are my initial thoughts as a end user who has not yet contacted Continental.

I have run Avons, Bridgestones, Metzlers, Dunlops, and now the Continentals.

By far, without question, the WORST noise and vibration from the very start, and it's getting worse.

Temperatures seem to be just a tad cooler than the Metzlers.

Traction in dry conditions seem to be right on point with my preferred tires.

I will post an update if anything changes but I want these tires off my bike as soon as possible.

I put a Conti Motion on the front of 2001 Goldwing. Prior to mounting it I noticed that the tread depth appeared to be exceptionally shallow. I have 9000 miles on it now and it is worn out. I usually get 14,000 - 15,000 miles on a front. While I had no issues with traction (I'm a fairly sedate rider) or handling, I am VERY disappointed with the short tire life. This tire is NOT a good value!

1,200 miles on new Conti's. Exactly as advertised, quick warmup, quick fall-in gives me the fast handling that I need as a commuter with a 2001 GoldWing.

Haven't needed to ride in heavy rains yet, but grip is still better than the OEM Dunlops which were always treacherous when wet.

Will be riding in 3" of rain tomorrow. I'll do another review afterwards.

I ride a lot of freeway here in LA commuting 100 miles a day. Like others, there were no reviews when I purchased these Conti's from WingStuff. From day one these tires have felt too quick on the steering...much like the center of gravity moved up in the bike. They exibit more road noise than I expected and now with 4K on them, the front is developing several swells in the tread area making an odd rythmic noise. One thing I must point out. These tires do not like painted lines, bot's dot's or water. All said, I am retiring these before they retire me. I do use a tire monitoring system so these were always kept at correct pressures. I am going back to the Avons. So far they have been the best on my '06 Goldwing.

Tires have approx.2800 miles have vibrated from day one between 20 and 50 mph,it buzzes the floor boards,I think it still there above 50 mph but its not noticable...the rear tire is starting to cup on left side, frt has slight feathering on left....handleing is OK in the dry not so good in the wet, tread vibration is so bad I can trust them and I'm taking them off before something bad happens. They balanced fine very little weight and ride smooth but the run and sound like a 4 wheel drive tire and that vibration causes heat and we know what happens after that...These tires are DANGEROUS

In dry conditions these tires are awesome, very neutral feel in the turns. I have had two traction incidents with them in rain. One was on an interstate moving from one lane to another. The rear fishtailed a little then the front kicked out. Handle bars jerked back and forth but it stayed upright.

The next time driving on a four lane highway 50-55mph steady speed, no brake, no steering input,DRIVING IN a STRAIGHT LINE the front kicked out. The bike went down, no injuries, cosmetic damage only, ATGATT saved my hide sliding down the road.

I have only had these tires for 4000 miles, never had any traction issues wet or dry with Avons(2sets) or the oem d250.

So be careful with these.

Update - Haven't heard anything back from the dealer, only that they shipped the rear tire to Germany for deeper inspection for failure cause.

In general... After reading review after review for all brands of tires, I question the overall stratigy of the manufactures. I've changed hundred of bike tires and note various owners comments that cupping has started at 6K miles and by 8K it's become very noticeable. The GL1800 is a heavy bike and coupled with riders and even that occasional trailer for a long trip one should expect 10 - 12K on average.

One question that comes to mind is the price vs quality race. It begs the question about overall quality/manufacture changes being made in effort hold prices. Accretion of wear is being noted.

Sorry that I can not recomend the Contra Tires. I had failure also. I had the tires balanced when they were put on at the local dealer and had them checked again before my trip to Oregon. I had a vibration the front and rear tires both went after 5000 miles( heel and toe both sides of the contra front and back) I got more mileage out of dunlop 2 than the contra

The bike is a 1800 2004 Goldwing

Update on the conti's. My front tire lasted only about 6 thousand miles, cupped very bad. I had the centramatic wheel balancers on them. Now I have a dunlope front E3. I took off the balancers to see if maybe they had something to do with the tires cupping very badly. So we'll see this round with the dunlops. I did like the design on the Conti's very much but with the cost of tires these days I need something that works so I will update the wear on the dunlops shortly.I did notice that the Conti's do heat up more than usual. They felt great at first to bad I couldn't keep them on long enough for a great review.
